Description
We believe that administrators can positively impact teaching and learning when they are in the classroom. This professional learning session will present tools to help administrators observe through various literacy lenses, so there is a specific focus and purpose for classroom visits.
Administrators use formal and informal observations of classroom environment and culture; student engagement and learning; assessment and goal setting; and whole-group, small-group, and individual instruction in order to determine strengths as well as identify goals and areas for ongoing focus. The observation checklists we provide will address research-based instructional practices that have been found to contribute significantly to students’ academic achievement. Through the collection of anecdotal data during classroom visits and by providing time for feedback and ongoing exchanges of thoughts and ideas, school leaders have the potential to establish a culture that prioritizes reflective practice and the growth and development of all teachers and students.
Over the course of the day, the following topics will be presented and discussed:
- Examine essential elements of Balanced Literacy
- Discuss instructional models that are used in workshop teaching and how administrators can learn more about, and provide additional support for teachers through whole-group, small-group, and independent practices;
- Cultivate a culture for collegial collaboration, school improvement, and professional learning;
- Lead and sustain the work of school leadership and professional learning teams to support the school’s vision for literacy teaching and best practices;
- Facilitate data analysis with teachers in order to set goals and identify trends;
- Examine the opportunities for teacher leadership within the school or district;
- Develop protocols for teachers to demonstrate student growth during team and faculty meetings; and
- Identify ways to enhance home-school connections as they relate to changes in literacy teaching and learning practices.
Additionally, you will receive a complimentary Schoolwide Administrator Toolkit (a $45 value!).
