About the Session
Join us to think about a few highly effective ways to increase success for multilingual learners during reading and writing workshops.
Michele and Pat will discuss research-based strategies and resources that help emergent bilinguals acquire content knowledge and build language and literacy skills.
Participants will explore ways to:
- affirm and validate students.
- provide comprehensible input.
- support meaningful interactions within any instructional model, program or setting.
Presenters
Michele Yanong, Education Specialist at The Illinois Research Center
Michele is an accomplished educator with over 20 years of experience in multilingual classrooms, bringing content to life through innovative instructional practices and infusion of the arts. Her background also includes teaching and designing graduate courses for EL Methodology, leadership experience in Sheltered Instruction Program implementation and design, and coaching work with teams of educators PreK-12 in the areas of literacy, math, technology and co-teaching. Through her work at the Illinois Resource Center, and other organizations that advocate for culturally and linguistically diverse students, Michele provides professional development in curriculum, instruction, and assessment for emergent bilinguals. Michele has a B.A. in Early Learning and Elementary Education, and an M.A in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in English Language Development. She often says that her best teachers were her students, from whom she was able to develop a passion for bilingualism, biliteracy, and culture.
Pat Pollack, Educator, Administrator, Director of Professional Development
Pat began her career as a classroom teacher, moving from the classroom into administration as an assistant principal, principal, and Director of Curriculum. She is a trusted partner in many school districts, having led meaningful professional learning sessions and helping them develop a culture of readers, writers, and thinkers. Read Pat's full bio.
